Learning history … through play: on-line treasure hunt on Arkadi

This year, the Primary Education Administration participates for the first time with 6th Grade Primary School students. Through cooperation within their groups, students will have to “discover” the Treasure on Friday, November 6th, carefully following the instructions and clues given. The treasure is of course symbolic, as it is in all Treasure Hunts organized in our city, and this makes the participation even more valuable. Through this experience, students “discover” the symbolic dimension of the Arkadic self-sacrifice as a milestone event.

However, the first three groups of each grade will be awarded a prize by the Sub-region of Rethymno, the Municipality of Rethymno and the Metropolis of Rethymno and Avlopotamos, in a special ceremony held on the Holiday of the Three Holy Hierarchs, by the Association of Classical Greek Teachers.

Support documents and further material were posted on arkadi.didereth.gr, and made available to students, in view of facilitating them in the study of the subject and their preparation. On the same webpage, students could find instructions about the game, whereas they could find further information about past treasure hunts on the Facebook page.

The title of this year’s hunt for the Secondary Education is “@rkadi@d@”. Hunters-arkadidromes, led by the math teacher Mr. Ilias Louloudis, who made the riddles, shall follow the steps of fighters as well as of the athletes who fought in memory of the former and shall give their own meaning to the celebration of the Holocaust through adventures, riddles and symbolisms.

For the Primary Education, little hunters are led by the teacher Mr. Nikos Deredakis to discover “The secrets of the Powder Keg” and the messages conveyed by the Arkadic Self-Sacrifice.

The design of the webpage, the electronic support of the platform of the on-line game and the rollout of the game for both Education Administrations are a project implemented by the IT teacher Mr. Manolis Metaxakis.

The general coordination of the game is assigned to the Association of Classical Greek Teachers of Rethymno.
