The artwork has been decorating, since Tuesday November 1st 2016, the Powder Keg of the Monastery, wherefrom the flames of history still inspire and brighten the whole world through the actions of self-sacrifice that took place in a location that is Sacred for Christianity and the ideals of freedom.
It also replaced the previous and timeworn copy of a painting that was installed at that place for many years.
For the creation of the artwork, the distinguished painter Ioannis Maravas was inspired by the famous painting by Theodoros Vryzakis, “The Monastery of Arkadi”.
Sepia colors were used to achieve a sense that is both earthly and metaphysic, as is the dramatic act of the defenders of the Monastery, whom we commemorate and honor through this artwork.
The plastic art company “Eikonotechniki S.A.” assumed the construction work and the professional responsible for the project was Mr. Manolis Varsamidis, who delivered the project in three levels.
In the foreground, the Hegoumen Gabriel is depicted holding the candle in his left hand and raising his right hand to give his blessing with the Holy Cross.
Behind him, the defenders and fighters of the Monastery are determined to remain unsurrendered and ready to commit their free spirit to their Creator God.
Finally, in the background is the Resurrection! The Resurrection of the Arkadi Monastery, crowned the Altarpiece of the Main (Catholic) Church, survived the Holocaust and is now preserved as a holy relic.
Here, we see the piece held by Angels and “crowning” the act of the heroes, who are glorified and become an eternal truth that lasts through time.
This piece of artwork was produced on occasion of the celebration of the 150 years from the Holocaust of the Monastery of Arkadi and will remain permanently installed at the Power Keg in memory of the Holy and Heroic History of the Monastery and the people who served it, designating it as a Global Symbol of Freedom and Self-Sacrifice.
